So patent applications are one of the most regular sources of news as to what a company may be up to in the future. Of course, a company may apply for a patent and not pursue that design altogether, but where’s the excitement in that? It’s a bit more exciting to speculate, like these new Samsung patent applications that show an interchangeable camera module.
Yes, you read that right. Google has been working on its modular phone project for a while now, and that has been delayed to 2016. But Samsung may just steal some thunder here if the Korean gadget giant proceeds to pursue this design. Take a look at the designs below.
Some designs show regular-shaped smartphones, and then some with a “bump” for the camera module quite like the Google Nexus 6P. And then the most outrageous design is one where the whole camera module comes off, with another one showing a detachable lens.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a smartphone with a real camera slant, and from the looks of these designs, it feels like it will take some time for these to become reality, if ever. But by then, we might just be blown away by a smartphone with real camera capabilities.
