Google’s new 10-inch tablet, the Pixel C, just debuted on the Google Play Store yesterday and a team from the mothership went on Reddit shortly after for an “ask me anything” (AMA) session. This was probably a good move for them since a lot of the Android fans out there would have some questions about the new tablet.
The Pixel C crew consisted of Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP Android and ChromeOS; Andrew Bowers, Director for Consumer Hardware; Glen Murphy, Director of UX for Android and Chrome; Kevin Tom, Product Manager for Pixel C; Puneet Kumar, Software Director for Pixel C; and Benson Leung, Software Engineer. First up, the name – Pixel C. Fans asked, why is it not a Nexus tablet? Murphy’s answer was simple enough: “Pixel is Google designed hardware; Nexus is hardware we work closely with partners to design.”
You will also be glad to know that the Pixel C is on a regular update path, and some features may be coming down the line, like multiwindow support which the table desperately needs, an “OK Google” hotword to wake the device from sleep, and possibly DisplayPort support over USB Type-C.
Lastly, the team confirmed that the Pixel C does have an unlockable bootloader and is supported by AOSP. That may be exciting news for those who want to create after-market custom ROMs for the Pixel C, looking at the impressive hardware they will be able to use in the tablet.
