Less than two weeks ago, a Google engineer named Benson Leung went busy checking on each USB Type-C cable and adaptor he found listed on Amazon. Unfortunately, he discovered that majority of the items are not up-to-spec. He even provided a spreadsheet of the products that should be able to work with the Pixel C, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and the OnePlus 2.
Only three products from brands iOrange-E, Frieq, and Belkin were discovered to be specs-compliant. About ten were tested but those seven that failed where the cheaper one–priced below $10. Leung noted that they did not follow the USB Type-C 1.1 specification. To add fuel to the fire, Benson Leung once again announced that another USB Type-C adapter for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and the Chromebook Pixel does not follow the specifications. He said that the OnePlus USB Type-C Adapter “uses the wrong identifier resistor”, therefore, it won’t work with the latest Chromebook and Nexus products.
Aside from the USB Type-C Adapter, the OnePlus USB Type-C to Type-A cable from OnePlus also does not work. The Google engineer reiterated that that cable isn’t spec compliant. The set specification says it must use a “Default USB Power” but instead, a 3A identifier resistor can be found. Leung warned that this “may cause damage to your charger, hub, or PC USB port if you use it with Chromebook Pixel, Nexus 6P, or Nexus 5X”.
Remember that OnePlus started selling the stand-alone USB Type-C Cable last month. OnePlus was proud of the two products and we even agreed they’re a pretty good buy for only $5.49. Oh well, as it turned out, it’s not that good, at least, in Google’s standards.
