The teardown specialists at iFixit have given Huawei’s Nexus 6P the usual teardown it gives to popular smartphone models and the verdict is in for the new Google flagship – don’t break anything inside it. Unlike the smaller LG-made Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P will be a pain to repair, owing to its unibody design. So if you own one, don’t break it.

“It’s very difficult — although not impossible — to open the device without damaging the glass camera cover,” iFixit says. I don’t think anything is impossible to get into with these guys at hand. But according to them, the unibody design of the phone “makes every component extremely difficult to replace.” Opening the device for repair can be very tricky, and iFixit used a microwave-heated opening device to pry loose the outer panel. From there, the team had to remove all the screws, some of which required prying off a camera cover using a curved razor blade.

The specialists also said that replacing a cracked display – a normal occurrence in our times, is very difficult for this unit. The device’s display assembly can’t be replaced without going through nearly every internal component, making an already difficult task all the more difficult.

The Nexus 6P scores a 2 out of 10 on iFixit’s repairability scale, a very low score indeed. This score puts it at par with the HTC One M9, another extremely difficult phone to repair, and in the same neighborhood with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. It seems like the unibody design of these phones – while gorgeous externally – almost always adversely affects the repairability of their internal components.
