Instagram, besides probably being the most popular photo sharing network, doesn’t just rest on its laurels. Aside from constantly introducing new features to the app, they’ve also launched other stand-alone products like Layout, Hyperlapse, and Bolt to enhance the multi media experience of users. Since GIFs are some of the most popular ways of communicating now, they’re also launching an app that will make gif-like videos for you. Welcome to the world of Boomerang.

Basically, Boomerang takes a series of photos and then edits them into a 1-second GIF-like video that plays backward and forward. Think Vine, but only shorter and less like a video and more like a moving image. All you need to do is press the button on the app, and it will be the one to edit it and do the magic. You can shoot the photos either in landscape or portrait and once the “video” has been made, it saves on your camera roll.

The video/photo must be shot within the app of course, but you can share it with other apps as well, including of course, Instagram. Even though Boomerang is that simple, it’s also a good thing that they made this into a stand-alone app so that the original will not be confused or cluttered. Now you have the freedom to make all the silly, funny clips that you want, and it’s just all in one second (well, the final product that is).

If you didn’t know it yet, Instagram was acquired by Facebook back in 2012, but as evidenced by a lot of the products launched since then, they still allow it to function as a separate entity, and Facebook develops its own photo and video products as well. You can download Boomerang from the Google Play Store for free.
