If it’s a popular consumer gadget and you want to take a look at what’s inside, trust the guys over at iFixit to give it a teardown treatment worthy of the name. As Google has recently released their new and updated hockey puck-shaped version of the venerable Chromecast, we now get to see what’s inside.
For anything this small and compact, the rule basically is – don’t break it. It was the same for the old Google Chromecast stick, which you really couldn’t repair given that there were no modular parts to repair. It’s the same with the new 2015 version – this isn’t something you’d want to break and repair. There would just be no point to it.
That said, there are some new things to be found out from the 2015 Chromecast’s teardown – mainly that Google applied copious amounts of thermal paste this time around. If you owned the older version of Chromecast, you will know that it has a tendency to overheat – even with that ginormous heatsink on the inside. This time, we can probably assume this won’t be the case.
The short HDMI cable on the hockey puck’s side is plenty strong, which is good to know. Even then, it is also internally detachable, and you can probably replace it if needs must. But it’s good to know that the cable itself is made of robust materials. Should you repair this when yours gets physically broken? You probably would be better off buying a new one.
