Just when you think they were going away for good, they make a comeback. We’re not talking about yoga pants, but rather, tech company BlackBerry. Most people have written them off, at least in terms of their phones, but recently they announced that they were releasing their first smartphone on the Android platform. Today, they released photos of their upcoming device called Priv and from the looks of it, there might be something there.
Blackberry CEO John Chen said that Priv stands for both “privacy and privilege”, and the former is what they hope will differentiate this from the hundreds of other Android smartphones in the market. The 5.5-inch device has a curved body and also a slider keyboard. They aren’t letting go of something, the keyboard to be exact, that was a factor on why some people stubbornly refused to let go of their BlackBerrys previously.
“Priv users will enjoy choice, innovation, security, privacy and productivity. In other words, no compromises,” BlackBerry says, although they didn’t really emphasize what are the things that would give those to the users. No release date or price range was given and the post was probably just to tease and get a gauge on the public’s reaction to the first BlackBerry device on Android.
The Chen interview, which went viral for all the wrong reasons, didn’t give much details about the Priv, except that “it runs on Google” and that they probably didn’t rehearse how he was going to use it. But we won’t judge the Priv yet on this interview but we’ll wait and see whether it lives up to its promise. At least it looks sleek and pretty, now let’s just hope it lives up to its promise.
