LG surprised us with the limited edition Watch Urbane Luxe over the weekend and now we’ve got news that the South Korean giant is ready to make our homes smarter than ever with the SmartThinQ Sensor. The company will be showcasing this new product that can be attached to a number of appliances at home that can transform them into smart devices. LG calls it “smart-aware” but it’s really just a smart appliance.
LG’s very own smart home technology starts with SmartThinQ Sensor that can be attached to any home appliance. There’s also the Smart Air Conditioner and Smart Lightwave Oven that LG will be showing off at the IFA 2015 later this week. Making all these possible and connected is the AllJoyn platform that brings Allseen Alliance’s internet of things to the devices.
The SmartThinQ Sensor is pretty much like the iHome HomeKit and iSP5 Smartplug that can make any home “smarter”. The Sensor works with a compatible SmartThinQ app that brings data and feedback to a user’s smartphone.
SmartThinQ works on the AllJoyn open-source software framework, allowing anyone to connect to the Internet, control devices, and share recipes or other information among others. First products that LG will be introducing at the IFA are the Smart Lightwave Oven and Smart Air Conditioner that are both WiFi-enabled. These appliances can inform the owner when the oven needs so be repaired or if the air filter needs replacing.
Smart home technology is advancing and we won’t be surprised if other companies will quickly follow suit. Google is also moving forward with the OnHub, Google On companion app, and the Brillo so expect more brands to launch their own versions very soon. As for LG, the SmartThingQ certainly has potential especially since the brand is also known for home appliances. It can be easier for the engineers to integrate their own smart home tech because they already know what’s inside.
