Recently, Xiaomi announced that it would (finally) give a refresh to the long serving MIUI 6 user interface. If you don’t know about MIUI, this is the preferred Android UI for Xiaomi devices, designed by Xiaomi themselves. It’s a little bit too much eye candy for me personally, but a lot of other people like the sleek and sweet style of MIUI. The refresh comes in the form of MIUI 7, all compatible for the Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Redmi 2, Mi 4i, Mi 3, Mi 4, Redmi Note 3G and Redmi Note 4G.
The official name for it is the MIUI 7 Global beta ROM, and it is now available for these devices either via OTA, or download and upgrade via the Fastboot utility. If you are willing to wait for it, your compatible Xiaomi device should give you a notification anytime during the next few days. Just make sure you are on a strong wifi connection when you do make the download.
If you want the upgrade now, you can manually flash the upgrade via Fastboot. You just need to download the update files – check the source link below for the download links of whatever compatible Xiaomi device you own. Remember though, that everything will still be under Kitkat — only the Mi 4i will be getting MIUI 7 based on Android Lollipop.
Just remember to make a backup of your data when you make the upgrade, just in case. Also, remember that Xiaomi states that this is a work in progress, and that they will be updating MIUI 7 beta every two weeks. Expect a few bugs here and there.
