If you know your mobile processors and hardware then you will know what MediaTek is all about – their whole purpose in life is to give manufacturers, and ultimately consumers, a cheaper option. Not necessarily a more efficient working one, but cheaper hardware that will do the same work as the high-end one. After recently announcing their Helio “X” series, MediaTek now outs the Helio P10, giving you a chipset with “true octa-core” performance and a speedier LTE connection.
The “P” series actually stands for “premium” performance, a bit lower than the “X” series (for extreme performance). So what does the Helio P10 chipset offer? First up, it offers eight 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores that go up to 2GHz. Not as powerful as the X10 which has A57 cores, but this lower “true octa-core” configuration will only make your battery last longer. For graphics, the P10 features a 700MHz dual-core 64-bit Mali-T860, and MediaTek’s MiraVision 2.0 which gives you butter-smooth 60 fps full HD display.
The P10 also gives you world mode LTE Cat 6, if a carrier offers it. That will give users 300 Mbps down / 50 Mbps up speeds, although quite frankly, LTE Cat 4 (at 150 Mbps / 50 Mbps) should be speedy enough for consumer usage. Another practical addition to this chipset is the addition of a decent HiFi audio chip rated at 110dB SNR and -95dB THD. This will further lower the manufacturing price of a device as the manufacturer does not need to integrate a stand-alone audio chip.
Lastly, this SoC will be the first to be built with TSMC’s 28nm HPC+ process, guaranteeing up to 30% less power consumption compared to existing SoCs manufactured using the 28nm process. MediaTek says that they will start shipping the Helio P10 in Q3 this year, so in real world terms, we should see devices using this new processor in Q4 of 2015 or early 2016.
