How many premium brand mid-tier phones can you name that will have updated specs, 4G connectivity, and an HD screen to boot? Not that many, we think. Thankfully, HTC is adding another smartphone to the sub-USD$200 category this year with the HTC Desire 626. It has officially launched in Taiwan, but we’re hoping this makes it out to the international markets.

What’s under the hood of this new HTC smartphone? Well, you get a 5-inch HD (720p) display that is vibrant and should be enough for daily use. That in turn is powered by a very serviceable Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor – quad-core at 1.2GHz – supported by 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is 16GB and is expandable via microSD slot.

Being that this is an HTC phone, you can be sure that it will carry, at the very least, a decent camera. The main shooter is a 13MP camera with a BSI sensor and f/2.2 aperture, capable of recording videos in 1080p, and a 5MP selfie camera is at the front, which also takes videos in full HD. Not bad, eh?

There’s a non-removable 2,000mAh battery – our only beef with this phone, but HTC had to cut costs somewhere. Given the pricing, it’s nice that the supports LTE connectivity. The HTC Desire 626 is probably an upgrade to the earlier budget-friendly Desire 620 is available in Taiwan and costs around USD$190. Color options include dark blue and white.
