Pwnie Express is delivering yet another mobile tool to help security experts in their quest to harden their or their employer’s networks. This time, they are taking Google’s most powerful smartphone yet, the Nexus 5, and selling it as the Pwn Phone 2014
Right out of the box, you already get a smartphone that is definitely worth owning, both as a simple end user and as someone who needs the sheer power of the device for penetration testing. You have at your fingertips a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 with an ample 2 GB of RAM and a somewhat spacious 32 GB of internal storage. It also doesn’t hurt to have a 5-inch 1920×1080 display and a reliable but sadly unremovable 2,300 mAh battery. Given the rather open nature of the Nexus family of devices, it is not surprising that Pwnie Express would once again turn to them for a mobile pen testing tool, just as it did with the Nexus 7 and its Pwn Pad 7 more than a year ago.
Of course, the true calling of the Pwn Phone 2014 is testing just how secure, or insecure, your network really is. And for that purpose, Pwnie Express has included a substantial amount of features Given how the smartphone is entirely touch-driven, a “One Touch” suite of pentesting apps have been included, including Evil AP, Strings Watch, Full Packet Capture, and more. Whatever the network, whether it be WiFi, Bluetooth, or even wired Ethernet, the Pwn Phone 2014 has features for packet injection and monitoring. It even comes with a protective hard-shell case to make your device physically secure as well.
The Pwn Phone 2014 does come with a rather hefty price. It costs a whopping $1,295, more than thrice the price of a regular 16 GB Nexus 5 smartphone. But then again, unless you’re in the pentesting or security industry, professionally or as a hobby, you probably wouldn’t be pining for this device anyway.
