BlackBerry began teasing an update for BBM earlier in the month. There were some details offered at the time, however BlackBerry opted to keep any sort of release date a mystery. Well, it seems April 1st was the date they had been waiting for. The latest BBM update brings the app to version 2.1 with new features to include stickers, group image sharing and larger file transfers.
The stickers are touted as being “larger, bolder and more expressive images than emoticons.” They will be available for purchase and those interested will be able to find them by navigating into the BBM Shop. BlackBerry mentioned how there will be a variety of sticker packs available and each will include between 20 and 25 stickers.
The BBM Shop will have some sticker packs for free to begin with, and otherwise, some will be priced at $1.99. One of those free sticker packs will be courtesy of WWE, who happen to be promoting WrestleMania 30. There was also mention about how BlackBerry will be adding new sticker packs on a regular basis.
Shifting away from the stickers and over to the group image sharing and we find just that — the ability to share an image with a group of BBM users. These images will be delivered in chat as a thumbnail, which can then be opened in full size. This BBM v2.1 update also increased the file transfer size which means higher quality images (amongst other files). That said, the file size has been increased by 10MB, and now sits at 16MB per file.
