Keen eyes have spotted the Xperia T2 Ultra, with the model number D5316, making its way through the FCC. It seems that Sony will be bringing this mid-tier phablet to the US after all and it will be arriving via T-Mobile.
At CES 2014 in Las Vegas, Sony unveiled the Xperia T2 Ultra and its sibling, the Xperia T2 Ultra Dual, as what it calls a “stunning LTE Android smartphone at mid-range price point.” Back then, Sony was aiming the large smartphone for emerging markets, implying that it would be limiting distribution to regions like China, Africa, Middle East, and the like. Thus it is surprising, though probably not unwanted, to see this device heading to the US with T-Mobile’s branding slapped on.
Highlights of this device include a 1.4 Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of internal memory, expandable with a microSD card. The 13 megapixel rear camera might be decent for your usual mobile photography, but the 1.1 megapixel shooter at the front might not be up to selfie standards. And, of course, there is the large 6-inch display which is, unfortunately, capped at 720p resolutions. It has support for 4G LTE networks, which T-Mobile subscribers will surely take advantage of.
The model spotted at FCC seems to be the plain Xperia T2 Ultra. The dual SIM version is still a no show, though such devices haven’t really been popular in the US. There is still no word on pricing, though hopefully Sony will stick to its goal of a mid-tier pricing range. Depending how that goes, the Xperia T2 Ultra might be an affordable and adequate, if not huge, shooter considering the bevy of Sony’s camera features also installed.
