Rumors surrounding the HTC One follow-up device have been pointing to a few names. The handset currently sports a codename of HTC M8, however we have seen HTC One Two and HTC One+ being thrown around as potential launch names. HTC has yet to offer any sort of formal announcement, however adding a plus sign to the name is something they have done in the past.
Anyway, a recently discovered trademark filing suggests HTC may not be using the One+ name. The filing belongs to Shenzhen Oneplus Science and Technology Co Ltd, which in simpler form is OnePlus. For those still not familiar with the name, this is the company that was formed by Pete Lau after he left OPPO. It is also the same company that will be working with Cyanogen.
Recent teasing from OnePlus mentioned how their new phone will run a “new, specially customized version” of CyanogenMod. Details beyond that remain a mystery, however, shifting back to the USPTO trademark fling and we are looking towards serial number 86108163 which notes the following;
“The mark consists of the word one in stylized lettering followed by a + in bold font.”
The filing dates back to November 1, 2013 and is under the category of “Computer & Software Products & Electrical & Scientific Products.” This of course, leaves plenty open for interpretation. With what we would assume are competent lawyers on both sides, this could still go either way.
For now, we are going to be looking for details on both the handset from OnePlus, and also from HTC — regardless of what the names will end up being. Neither company has offered much in the way of details in terms of when an announcement can be expected, but Mobile World Congress will be here before we know it. The show kicks off in Barcelona towards the end of February.
