Pebble, makers of what many consider to be the best smartwatch around, have something to announce at CES next week. They’re being coy about what’s in store, but it must be pretty big for them. The natural assumption is hardware changes, but it could be much more than that.
If nothing else, it just might be time for a second iteration. It was late January of 2013 when the first Pebble’s started shipping, so it could be time for the team to announce what’s next. We can speculate all day long, but our guess is a color screen. We don’t think it will be fancy, but an off-the-cuff remark on the blog about founder Eric Migicovsky being “color correct” was a bit odd.
It was at CES 2013 that Pebble first announced their release date, too, so a new hardware iteration would make sense. It could also be a smoother UI, or perhaps a hardware partner. They recently announced their app store, putting them on the same scale as some bigger players in the world of mobile. For us, a color screen is the one thing really holding them from prominence, and on our ‘want’ list for Pebble.
At the end of the day, we just don’t know. We know they are broadcasting it on their blog January 6th at 11am PST, so be sure to check it out if you’re interested. We’ll be live at CES to bring you all the information as well, so be sure to check back often!
Really? A Color screen? Did we forget that last years live stream looked like a color negative the entire stream? I’m pretty sure that’s the only thing “color correct” is referring to. I’m hoping for some upgrade of hardware, but I doubt it’ll be color.
Peeble is so ugly and e-ink, to a watch, is kinda awkward.
I really like the pebble watch and how it works. But I recently tried Sony’s New smart watch I like that one better. Plus it’s not, waterproof and right now it’s only 159 at best buy. It will be interesting to see what pebble comes up with. Maybe their next version at even lower price. Now that would be awesome.
Even if it used OLED, wouldnt the change from e-ink significantly deteriorate the battery life?
Could be mirasol..
Ordered the Grey Pebble on Black Friday. It still has not shipped. I’ve tried contacting them. No response. CNET seemed to gush over them. At this point I’ll probably cancel. Wait to see what the Galaxy Gear 2 has to offer.
