Big news from Sony last week was the addition of a Google Play edition Z Ultra. This week we are once again hearing from Sony, but this time around they are talking updates for previously released devices. In this case, Sony has announced that the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra will be getting Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. And better yet, the updates are beginning from today.
Of course, the news of the update beginning today comes with the usual disclaimer. Further details from Sony make it clear that “timing and availability may vary by market and carrier.” Or in other words, Sony has announced the update, not your carrier. One can hope the carrier announcements will follow shortly, but in the meantime, Sony has detailed what this update means for the handsets.
For the most part the update will be the same between the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra. The update will begin with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
“Google’s Android 4.3; Jelly Bean as standard – bringing Project Butter performance & UI optimization and a smoother graphical experience.”
Along with the bump in Android versions, some of the Sony specifics will be updated. Sony mentioned how the “entire native app portfolio” would be brought up to the latest versions. This includes, but is not limited to the Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID and Sony Select apps.
The Sony Media apps including WALKMAN, Album and Movies will also be updated and Sony will also be adding Xperia Themes which will give users the opportunity to download UI packs. Lastly, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra will be getting an update that includes the Sony Smart Social Camera. With that, we now need to be on the lookout for those carrier announcements for a slightly better timeline for when the update can be expected.
