Following some earlier rumors, Dell has re-entered the Android world this morning. Specifically, to the Android tablet market with the introduction of the Venue 7 and Venue 8 tablets. As the numbers in the name imply, these are 7-inch and 8-inch tablets and both are IPS with a resolution of 1280 x 800. Otherwise, both are sporting relatively low price points and both are expected to arrive a bit later in the month.

The Venue 7 is powered by a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560 Clover Trail+ processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The Venue 8 has the same in terms of RAM and storage, however the processor is a dual-core 2.0GHz Intel Atom Z2580 Clover Trail+. Both models have near matching specs otherwise.

Measurements for the Venue 7 are as follows; 7.6 x 4.6 x 0.38-inches and the Venue 8 measures in at a slightly larger 8.3 x 5.1 x 0.35-inches. As for weight, those come in at 8.3 ounces and 10.3 ounces respectively. They each have a microSD card slot for added storage, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 15.5Whr battery, microUSB and will be running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

As for the camera setup, this will differ between the Venue 7 and Venue 8. The 7 will have a VGA quality on the front and 3 megapixel on the back while the 8 will have a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera. Aside from WiFi connectivity, Dell has included a SIM card slot on both the Venue 7 and Venue 8 tablets. Both models are expected to be available on October 18th. The Venue 7 will be priced from $150 and the Venue 8 will be priced from $180.

  1. Another series of tablets launching next week offer impressive performance and very competitive pricing — as Ramos Technology has partnered with Intel to introduce the i-Series with 8″, 9″, 10″ and 12″ size models (ranging $189-$299); and all feature HD displays and Intel’s new CloverTrail+ performance processor with Hyper-Threading technology…

    The most compact model is the Ramos i8 ($189) – which is the world’s thinnest 8″ tablet… that offers a very stylish and sleek design; along with the durability of an aluminum-nickel frame.

    The new Ramos i8 compares to Dell’s Venue 8 tablet, matching most features, including an Intel processor and 7.9″ HD screen.

    A key advantage to an 8-inch display is it’s still compact and easy to carry, but compared to the more traditional 7″ tablet size, offers 40% more screen area, which makes a significant difference to make viewing tablet content much easier.

  2. My Galaxy Note 10.1 was just updated
    to Android 4.2.2 (without asking me), and I have lost almost everything! Most of my apps that were purchased from the
    apps store are GONE! My e-mail is
    GONE! All of my saved files are
    GONE! All of my settings and front page
    setup are GONE! It did not come with any
    user help, nor is there any with the software.
    The procedures used under the previous version of the OS are not working! If I cannot get this upgrade uninstalled, I
    will be forced to go back to an Apple product, which I do not want to do.

    Samsung says that they can do nothing about it. This is an Android problem! Samsung cannot (will not) undo the firmware
    upgrade. However, their phone lines are
    lighting up with complaints about this problem.
    The call center person I talked with said that her Asus Transformer Pad
    will not even boot.

    I have been developing software for critical systems for
    more than 40 years. This is close to the
    worst implementation I have ever seen.
    It was

    – not tested;
    – notification was not given to the users;
    – no documentation/help screens were provided;
    – radical changes were made to the operating system;
    – no provisions were made to undo a horrible mess;
    – accomplished on a Sunday evening where the “poor
    end users” could not reach a technical or management person.

    I guess this is what I get for letting my business become too dependent on an operating system and piece of hardware. I will also be replacing my Galaxy SIII and SIV phones, as I cannot trust Android/Google not to bring them down in an instant.

    Does anyone know how to uninstall Android 4.2.2?

    Is this another step in Google’s arrogance in believing that
    they know better than were the users know about what we want?

  3. The weight of the Venue 8 just keeps getting higher and higher. First it was 290 grams. Then it was 350 grams. And now it is 372 grams. I wonder how much heavier it will be by Turkey Day?
