Having more is something that is generally thought of as good thing when it comes to apps. Well, some may disagree, however given that is the stat we most often heard spoken when it comes to the success, or alternatively, the failure of a mobile platform. We also often seen praise when mobile app numbers are on the rise. Today we have some good news, but in terms of an app count dropping.
It seems that the Google Play Store app count decreased by nearly 60,000 in February. Maybe Google was doing a bit of spring cleaning ahead of the version 4.0 update that is expected to arrive in the not to distant future. Speculation as to why aside though, the reasoning as to why this decrease in apps is a good thing is that they were not all that great in terms of quality.
Google has in the past been pretty good about removing apps that caused an issue. The issues that determine a removal include everything to a simple violation of the terms of service to something a bit more troublesome such as those containing malware. In this instance, it is being reported that many of the apps removed were from the MP3/ringtone category, which as one can imagine — likely has some issues with copyright.
End result here, this is one instance where less probably means better. And in the end, aside from the more involved mobile geek that enjoys keeping track of statistics in terms of the app count, we suspect this will mean very little if anything to the average user. Sure, they may have lost access to their favorite ringtone app, but there will likely be another arriving shortly. In the meantime, this seems like a good time to state the obvious — app quality should count above app quantity.
