Verizon, after a rather long wait, began updating the Galaxy Nexus to Android 4.2.2 last week. And as one would expect as a follow-up to that, the official factory image has since been posted on the Google Developers page. Basically, this should be good news for those who like to jump from ROM to ROM as this image will provide a simple and easy way to get back to your stock setup.
The factory image is for Android 4.2.2 with build number JDQ39. In addition to the 4.2.2 image, the Google Developers site still has the 4.1.1 (JRO03O) and 4.0.4 (IMM76K) images available for download. Aside from this release for Verizon Galaxy Nexus users, the vast majority of 4.2.2 factory images were posted back in mid-February. At that time we saw the images go live for the Nexus 10 and 7 tablets as well as the Nexus 4 smartphone.
While Google will likely keep these up and posted, if you are planning to begin playing around with various ROMs on your Verizon Galaxy Nexus — it may be of some benefit to have the 4.2.2 image already downloaded and saved locally. This will serve to minimize any downtime for your device, but will also come in really handy should Google ever temporarily pull it down.
All said and done, this is just another of those times when it seems like the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is playing catchup with the other Galaxy Nexus. After all, it wasn’t all that long ago that the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was a full four updates behind. Thankfully that has since changed and if nothing else, it will stick around and serve as a reminder that the best way to buy a Nexus device is to do so directly from Google without the carrier involvement.
