Do you, by chance, own a Samsung Galaxy Nexus or a Nexus S? If you do, then here’s some news you’re bound to like: both phones are slowly getting an update to Android 4.1.2, and you don’t have to do that much to get it. Since it’s an OTA update, all you need to is select the software update option from your settings menu and you’ll be good to go.
Before you get too terribly excited, however, our pals at SlashGear point out that only GSM Galaxy Nexus phones are getting this update today. That means if you’re using Verizon‘s version of the phone, you’ve got a little while to wait before the update becomes available for you. We’re not sure how much longer that wait will be, but it seems like the update should be coming down the line shortly.
It shouldn’t take too long before you’re running Android 4.1.2 on your Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S either, as the whole thing is only 15.1MB in size. Whereas the update to Android 4.1.2 gave Nexus 7 users a long-awaited landscape mode last week, this update is giving Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S users increased notifications functionality – now, you can expand notifications with a single touch. There are of course some some bug fixes included in the update, but we’re not getting any specifics as far as bug and stability fixes go.
See? There isn’t much to this update, so even though Verizon users have to wait – and indeed, even if you’ve got the right version of the Galaxy Nexus, it still might be a little while before it hits your individual phone – it isn’t as if this Android 4.1.2 update brings any new features you need to have right away. Have any of you Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S owners received your OTA update to Android 4.1.2 yet?
When will the ROM come out for the Verizon version?
4.1.2 has been merged into custom Verizon Galaxy Nexus roms for over a week. The official update from Verizon…. who knows! They take forever!
Hey Zach.. there is no official ROM for Vrizon on 4.1.2 as i see. Here is the link to the latest JB release for Verizon and its still at 4.1.1 https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#mysid
I received the OTA update notice around 0900 Pacific Time. 🙂
Hi Everybody. I just received the 4.1.2 update for my Galaxy Nexus (stock yakju, unrooted, locked, open line network). There is not a whole lot of difference. Only difference I see:
– 1 finger scroll down and scroll up expansion for notifications. This is cool!
– Some check boxes have now become toggle switches (big deal right?)
I can confirm that the stock launcher DOES NOT have landscape swivel (i personally dont like it anyway).
Project butter seems to have gotten a little more buttery. The 2nd app screen lag seems to be gone now.
Thats it. Don’t keep your expectations too high. Looks like most of the changes are under the hood.
I used the force OTA update method Settings>Apps>All apps>Force Stop>Clear Cache. Now go to Settings>About Phone>System Updates>Check for updates. It took me about 5 attempts before i got the update. Enjoy!
Hi, will doing an OTA delete existing APP/Data?
please respond.
Hi.. not sure what you mean doing an OTA delete! If you do an OTA update, there is no data loss. Everything that you had on your phone stays exactly as is including your personlization settings.
…will doing an OTA (update) delete existing APP/Data?…
No, doing an OTA will not delete any of your APPs, Data, Personalization settings etc. It is an official Google OTA that you will be getting and it will update your OS seamlessly with zero data loss.
how long the updating process take?
The OTA file is 15 MB. Takes a few minutes to download. The update after that doesn’t take more than 3-4 minutes.
how about the price in malaysia?
Thanks dude, to force update do following: Settings>Apps>All apps>Google Servcies Framework>Force Stop>Clear Cache. try now the update
Hey I have a question…
I have GNex Rooted and Unlocked marguro:4.1.1/yakju
I am yet to get OTA .. Will I not get OTA coz I rooted the device ? sum1 pls reply
No but you can download the update from XDA.
OTA is not supported for rooted devices. The official 4.1.2 update for maguro and yakju (you mention both) is out. You can download the image and flash it manually. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
i cant update my galaxy nexus to jelly bean i live in Kuwait why i cant update my galaxy nexus to jelly bean
What ROM are you running? Images are out only for certain ROMs like takju, and yakju. You will not get an OTA update if you are running localized ROMs such as yakjuxw or other variants from google but from Samsung (which takes time). Your choice is then to either flash your existing ROM to an OTA friendly ROM such as yakju / tajku or install this update manually. I would suggest the former. Just google it for toolkits and detailed instructions on how for both.
Cancelled my update on Gnex, was in the middle of something – thinking it would let me request manually later.. nope repeatedly bashing check now does nada 🙁
the nexus 7 has 4.1.2 sitting pretty in landscape didn’t cancel on that ^_^
will confirm if refreshing will allow me to request again as previous poster suggests 😉
Nexus S on T-Mobile. Got my update this morning. Only difference I see is that my phone is faster and smoother now. Other than that, I don’t see anything else.
Is auto brightness really improved in 4.1.2, or that’s only me ?
Since you own an Android device, you are already pretty bright!
Hi!
I got the OTA update for my nexus s a few days ago and everything went fine.
Today I got a problem though, I took a photograph and the phone suddenly died. I did a restart and the same thing happened ones again. Only this time it didn’t even start 🙁 I’ve experienced problems with the camera making the phone dead before, but I’ve always been able to boot up again.
Everything is stock and I have tried three different batteries and with AC plugged in.
Any ideas?
/Pierre
