Three months after Google decided to temporarily shut down their Map Maker tool because of some users that abused the features, the tech giant has finally announced that they are bringing it back online in 45 more countries, including the US. Two weeks ago, 6 countries were given back this privilege and after some fine-tuning, Google is now opening up Map Maker, but with a few changes to try and ensure the incidents don’t happen again.
Map Maker product manager Pavithra Kanakarajan said that bringing the tool back online for these 45 countries is the second phase of their reopening. The 6 countries that went ahead before anyone else were Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, the Philippines, and Ukraine. Some changes announced a few weeks ago have now come into effect to make sure that things run more smoothly now. For one, they have chosen “Regional Leads” from every region to moderate submissions and monitor the modifications made for their area’s map. These are people who have proven over time that they give quality contributions to Google Maps and the Map Maker community in general.
Polygon editing has also been disabled now, as this was the source of one of the most controversial map edits that led to the temporary shut down of the service. If you need to remember, some people who had too much time on their hand made an Android character pee on an Apple logo. So now, creating shaded areas to show mountain ranges, forests, parks, etc, has been disabled.
To make sure that your country has Map Maker again, you can go to google.com/mapmaker and type in your country’s name. You will see a “We are glad to be back” message, and then a listing of all the changes that have been made for Map Maker.
