We are shocked that since the official release of the Android source code we have not seen more devices running Android. It seems that there were more devices running a port of Android even without the source code than there are today.

We have recently come across a video of the Nokia n810 Internet tablet booting Android. While not much is shown in the video, we can see the slide-out menu works correctly. It seems that when Android is ported it automatically fits the screen that you are using. Even though we know this port lacks functionality, we can’t help but be excited about what is to come. With advancements like this being made it shows great potential for Android in the future.

And yet, today Reuters reported the VP head of markets at Nokia still says that while it likes a Linux maemo for its bigger devices, Android doesn't offer anything special:

""I don't see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo," Lappalainen said.

People really ought to avoid insulting the 'Droid!
  2. You do realize of course that I can make a video of Android booting and play it on ANY phone that supports video playback.

And then pretend to make a single touch that shows the menu opening, and then stop the camera.
  3. true. And I don't see Nokia paying Google for Android licensing when they can do an in-house linux for their own devices . . . not to mention that they just purchased Symbian and budgets are tight for all these guys.

Which is also why those who are holding their breath for a Q1-Q2 Motorola Android device are turning blue for no particular reason. Don't bet on it, sportsfans.
  4. Well, I don't think he's in a position to admit that Android has superior usability compared to Maemo. That said, the N8x0 Internet Tablets would be a poor choice for Android seeing that the screen is a resistive touchscreen, not a capacitative one, thereby hampering the user experience. Canola on the N8x0 is able to simulate a capacitative touchscreen, nothing more.

You are aware that it's not Nokia that have done this? It's a company that works with Embedded Linux Software Developing, called NthCode.
Oh, and BTW. You don't have to pay Google to use Android as an OS on a phone.

    Oh! I stand corrected . . .

    But confused.

Why would Nokia want . . . . oh, this is all about bragging rights. Or some complicated long-term business model I don't understand. Develop something for free to leverage something-or-other . . .
  7. If you had read the article you would have seen this:

We work with embedded Linux systems at NthCode, so we thought it would be a fun challenge (and would help with a project we're working on) if we could port Android to an existing Linux device.
It has absolutely nothing to do with Nokia, except for the fact that NthCode used a Nokia phone for this.
