We have been getting reports in this morning that the LG G2x is now getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update over the air (OTA) today from T-Mobile. It leaked just last week for manual download and plenty of users jumped over to get the latest taste of Android but now users can do it the easy way via the OTA update.

With all the troubles and issues the G2x faced I’m glad to finally see the update arrive, it’s a shame it took so long although they did original say “coming this summer”. Yesterday we heard it was going to be available in stores again and come out of the box with Android 2.3 Gingerbread but we still have no confirmations regarding that. Early reports are claiming almost all issues have been fixed and the device is speeding along as it was originally intended.

Not only are you getting the speed and user interface updates from Gingerbread but T-Mobile and LG have addressed the random reboots, the lock ups that required battery pulls, as well as the spastic battery life. My G2x was so inconsistent that I never felt comfortable without a charger around. Users should be able to go into settings and check for the update right on their device and it should begin downloading over the air. Make sure to have pretty full battery life and a good 10 minutes to wait for completion.

  1. Can anyone confirm whether Video-Chat-enabled Google Talk(hereafter VCEGT) works with this latest firmware?

note: I understand that the VCEGT is included in 2.3.4 and NOT 2.3.3 so it will not work by default.
Notwithstanding that, it has long been possible to make VCEGT work on any phone with any version of GB, with the exception of those phones for which there are missing pieces of framework, including –at least prior to this update– the G2X.

    Thanks!

    • I did the up date on LG website but I want the t- mobile update is it to late? Or is it away for me to get the t-mobile update

      • I spoke with several reps and they all insisted that the way this update is rolling out, if you have a G2X, you will get the OTA update.  It doesn’t matter if you are running a ROM, Froyo, a leaked GB build, or the LG GB build, as long as your phone identifies itself as a G2X on T-Mobile’s network, you will receive the option to install the OTA update.

      • The OTA update and the LG tool update are the EXACT same. No differences. Both are software V21e and Kernel Version 2.6.32.9

  2. The update is being rolled out at intermitten times. Which is weird because the Froyo update was rolled out in regions rather than a group of users, a handful at a time. All I can say is keep checking the Software Update on your device and keep your fingers crossed. If you haven’t gotten it yet, just sit tight and I’m sure the update will arrive eventually.

  3. I’m still sitting on the bench waiting for some GB playtime. “Please put me in coach, I know I can make you proud!!!” Keeping my fingers crossed waiting for the update to hit my device. Why must it take so long???

  4. update. just use your computer and get it. i went through a whole business day which would normally kill my battery and i still have 60% left. wahoo.

  5. Hate that the upgrade messed with the zoom on video recording.  If it didn’t, I can’t figure out how to zoom on video recording.  :/

  6. finally, something T-Mobile told me was coming months ago, finally arrived (OTA). Hoping it corrects the issues as intended, I can say that over the last couple of days since the update that the random lockups/reboots seems to be significantly diminished (used to be multiple times a day, I think it’s rebooted unexpectedly once since the update process), and battery life does seem improved (used to drain in <24 hours, now it seems to be able to go about a day and a half (most of my battery use is cell standby and work is a cell unfriendly environment).
