The T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) service manual has popped up on the Internet for those of you do it yourselfers. Although we don’t believe they intended for us to have this document, it does go along with one of the open source theories, if you can’t open it, you don’t actually own it.

This 113-page service manual is basically the ultimate in geek porn, covering full teardown techniques to testing and troubleshooting methods. You may even see “certified G1 technicians” popping up on Craigslist over the next few weeks. This guide also gives you pinouts and other various technical specifications so that you can get your mod on.

For those of you who are brave enough to tear your expensive G1 down even if just for fun, we want your pictures! I know I have been the first to tear into a perfectly fine primary device based on curiosity and bringing tutorials to users.  Post a comment and show us your teardown and be sure to include your screen name in there so you don’t get flamed. And yes we do know if you post a picture from the manual.

  1. Hmmm... on page 14/113 it says "For horizontal orientation rotate your device, or open the display to reveal keyboard."

I wonder if that got nix'd because of issues or something. Hoping to see that in that new update.
  2. Wow, you guys are way behind I posted this like a week ago......

This functionality does exist, Power Manager uses it. Its just not a part of the basic OS setup. They may have turned it off to save battery power. Otherwise it would always be monitoring the axis of the phone.

Nothing wrong with him mentioning that it was posted earlier...

The OS itself does not do it. Each app can implement it. The phone already has a sensor that sends a message somewhere when it is rtated, it is up to developers to either use it or ignore it.
  11. I think there is a system-level setting for auto-rotate. The apps will defer to this unless specifically set.

It is mentioned somewhere in the following thread, which is a mod you would need root to do until Google releases an updated firmware.

  12. Looks like the firmware can be reflashed with the diagnostic card--probably a regular SD card with some special software on it. Just need the HTC full image . . . might this be a way to downgrade the firmware to re-root the phone? I hope so.

    *wishing he hadn't applied RC30*
