Even though Google said that T-Mobile G1 only supports up to an 8GB microSDHC card, with future support for the 16GB version after a firmware upgrade, that’s not the case. We just got confirmation from Google spokesperson that the current version of Android can handle the new SanDisk 16GB card right out of the box.

“We have completed tests, and the new SanDisk 16GB card will run on the current version of Android. No new firmware required.” -Google Spokesperson
SanDisk’s 16GB microSDHC card has an MSRP of $99.99 and will be available at Best Buy Mobile stores in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November - the only major retailers in the United States to carry this mobile storage capacity in 2008.

Bah, I just got my 8gb as well. Oh well, I can't justify paying 3x the price for 2x the space. 8gb should last me a while, and I'll just upgrade when I need it.

Yep, I just ordered my 8gb as well. I don't download music and stuff though, so I am sure that should be more than enough for my needs.

Well I ordered and received my 8GB MicroSD already so that'll do till I think I need more room.

Yeah, I decided to just go ahead and buy the 16 GB and use the 8GB for something else.

Isn't the cost more for the 16gb compared to two 8gb ones? Though of course it is more convenient to have a single card. Probably a good idea to hold out until the prices get lower.

i have had an 8gb in my unlocked at&t 8525 for a few months now. i currently have a ton of ringtones on it, the hulk movie, the entire kjb in mp3, alot of programs and alot of various audio files{sermons, coast to coast, music etc.} i currently still have around 3gigs free. so i'll just swap it to my g1 when that arrives. i'll wait for the price to drop on the 16gig. but it's great to know that g1 supports it.
by crazythunder

I agree. I think I'm just going to buy an 8gb for now and wait until the 16gb prices go down or *crosses fingers* maybe simply wait until the G1 supports 32.

Wow, I just checked out prices on the 16gb and am definitely OK with the 8gb I ordered now. Like I said, for what I download, I think it will be more than enough.....for now.

I'm going to just buy another 8GB card ($27 with adapters on NewEgg), and secure the MiniSD holder behind the battery cover with the second card in it...it's just a thin plastic envelope. It'd always be there, tough to lose, easy to find/switch. Movies on one card, music on another!
by snoslicer8

The 8GB memory card is plenty of storage for the average consumers. I've got about 1.3GB left on my 16GB iPhone 3G -- lots of music, a bunch of pics and videos along with a number of 3rd party apps. I think I'm a power user, how about you?

mine was a class4 from supermediastore.com, which i ordered a few months ago. they didn't have class 6 at the time. not even sure if they do now, but i think class6 is the highest read\write speed. keep an eye out for those classes.

You can NEVER have enough. With more, you can DO more!

That's a great idea, but how would you secure the holder?? Do tell...

Very Cool, So glad I waited!! Yeah...$75 for 16 gig or $24 for 8 gig. But I like having it all on one card!

right now the 8gig card will work, just need to order one, but that means I will have a 1,2,4,8 gig card ( if i buy the 8gig card ) or fork over the 75bucks for the 16gig... its still great news either way you look at it..

"What's that, iPhone user? You want to know how much storage there is in my G1? Why that would be 16.25 GB!"
-
yea, my 8 will do at least for a little bit. i got it for just over $20, i'd buy 2 ..or 3...or 4...of them before i spend $100 on (1) 16Gb card.

Good to hear. However, keep in mind that relying on an external source such as a SD card will most likely result in about a 30% drop in battery life. That's usually the case with most devices such as MP3 players, phones, etc. I guess until the battery life is assessed in the G1, this shouldn't be a concern.

Great news! I've been holding off buying one... so, I'm on the search for the best price on a 16gb card.

The 1GB card is plenty for me... I will wait for a 32GB just for bragging rights.

can someone tell me the difference between sandisk's microSD vs micro centers microSD???? is it just the badging?
-
ohh not fair, just ordered a 8gb this morning..

I got the 16g micorsd at BB. So for not so good. My movies that I have encoded keep freezing, just audio only, audio not in sync with video and errors coming up saying can't play the vidoe at this time. But I have the same 2 movies on the 1gig and they work just fine. So, I am assuming this must have to do with the speed of the 16g.

i'm not familiar with micro center, if its a brand or what not, but brand name products are the same with anything in life... usually its of better quality...

好是好,不过16g的卡实在贵了点。。不过很高兴因为卡总会降价的

My G1 phone could not read a 4GB Kingston MicroSDHC card. Even afterwards when I inserted the original 1 GB MicroSD card on to the G1 phone my mp3 song was stopped with SD card errors.
(47) comments | Add your commentsHmm. Well, I guess it kinda sucks that I just got my 8 GB disk in the mail yesterday! LOL.
Oh well, I guess I can get by with the 8 GB until prices come down a little on the 16! VERY good news to know though! Just add this to the list of things Apple fanboys will be misrepresenting about the phone now! (G1 only supports 8 GB drive! FAIL)
32GB up next, Google! Get cracking
EDIT: OK I'm going to stick the 8GB into the adapter and use it on my camera....and then I'm going to still buy the 16GB one
Now that would def be good, even though i might go for the 16GB since i might enjoy the extra space.
Several vendors are indicating stock will arrive on October 10, so I would avoid Best Buy or Verizon unless you REALLY like paying full retail price.

Like I said, prices would drop, but I didn't expect 16GB without firmware update. YAY! I'll wait to get expansion at least another 1.5-2 weeks (when I figure out what else I really want to order for my baby). I agree it may be worth it to get 8GB now ...and wait for 32 GB for later.
WHEEEEE! And thanks for this great news!! by insight spinner
...When your buddy with the 16GB iPhone asks you how much storage your phone has...
...you won't have to say "4GB, but it's expandable to 16!"

P.S. BTW, installing a 32GB microSDHC when available will be even MORE important for a very similar reason! by RegGuheert
The G1 has an ammount of Onboard Memory (I forget how much). With a 16Gb card this means that we now have more storage then any iPhone?
Can someone confirm this so I can claim the Bragging rights with my iPhone owning friends. by Darrell

So yes...that is more then the iPhone
And thats not counting the 32GB sure to be on the way soon
And
Very funny!

1. I'm excited about the 16Gb being released now, not so I can buy it, but because this will drive down the 8GB prices even further.
2. The research I've done suggests that the bigger the card, the slower the card performs in real-world situations. So I'm afraid the 16GB at class 2 will be noticeably slower compared to an 8GB class 2. Until I hear differently, I will be going with 2 8gb class 6 cards at the same price. by VikingDave

and i am looking on amazon, newegg, etc. for the 8gb and there is like "class 4", "mobilemate reader", etc. what do they mean??? thanks. by cto424
But if it comes to the point I can always upgrade later on
So, I am pissed. I hope best buy takes it back and allows me to get the 8gig. by Outrun

I kept reading all of the G1 documentation and I have not seen any information regarding SD card upgrades or supported SD card formats. Very lame for a user manual, I read alot of comments about 16GB MicroSDHC card but I am curious if any of you had any luck with using the provided SD card or any SDHC card? by Jack Murphy
