Even though Google said that T-Mobile G1 only supports up to an 8GB microSDHC card, with future support for the 16GB version after a firmware upgrade, that’s not the case. We just got confirmation from Google spokesperson that the current version of Android can handle the new SanDisk 16GB card right out of the box.

“We have completed tests, and the new SanDisk 16GB card will run on the current version of Android. No new firmware required.” -Google Spokesperson
SanDisk’s 16GB microSDHC card has an MSRP of $99.99 and will be available at Best Buy Mobile stores in October and Verizon Wireless stores in November – the only major retailers in the United States to carry this mobile storage capacity in 2008.

Hmm. Well, I guess it kinda sucks that I just got my 8 GB disk in the mail yesterday! LOL.
Oh well, I guess I can get by with the 8 GB until prices come down a little on the 16! VERY good news to know though! Just add this to the list of things Apple fanboys will be misrepresenting about the phone now! (G1 only supports 8 GB drive! FAIL)
32GB up next, Google! Get cracking
EDIT: OK I'm going to stick the 8GB into the adapter and use it on my camera....and then I'm going to still buy the 16GB one
Now that would def be good, even though i might go for the 16GB since i might enjoy the extra space.
Several vendors are indicating stock will arrive on October 10, so I would avoid Best Buy or Verizon unless you REALLY like paying full retail price.

!?!
Like I said, prices would drop, but I didn't expect 16GB without firmware update. YAY! I'll wait to get expansion at least another 1.5-2 weeks (when I figure out what else I really want to order for my baby). I agree it may be worth it to get 8GB now ...and wait for 32 GB for later.
WHEEEEE! And thanks for this great news!!
...When your buddy with the 16GB iPhone asks you how much storage your phone has...
...you won't have to say "4GB, but it's expandable to 16!"

P.S. BTW, installing a 32GB microSDHC when available will be even MORE important for a very similar reason!
The G1 has an ammount of Onboard Memory (I forget how much). With a 16Gb card this means that we now have more storage then any iPhone?
Can someone confirm this so I can claim the Bragging rights with my iPhone owning friends.

1. I'm excited about the 16Gb being released now, not so I can buy it, but because this will drive down the 8GB prices even further.
2. The research I've done suggests that the bigger the card, the slower the card performs in real-world situations. So I'm afraid the 16GB at class 2 will be noticeably slower compared to an 8GB class 2. Until I hear differently, I will be going with 2 8gb class 6 cards at the same price.

And yes, I realize the image is not for this card...but I'm encouraged by the fine print!
So besides wanting to look like a D bag, there is really no need to get an iphone.
indeed it does llol
and i am looking on amazon, newegg, etc. for the 8gb and there is like "class 4", "mobilemate reader", etc. what do they mean??? thanks.
But if it comes to the point I can always upgrade later on
So, I am pissed. I hope best buy takes it back and allows me to get the 8gig.

buyer beware
I kept reading all of the G1 documentation and I have not seen any information regarding SD card upgrades or supported SD card formats. Very lame for a user manual, I read alot of comments about 16GB MicroSDHC card but I am curious if any of you had any luck with using the provided SD card or any SDHC card?
