NVIDIA SHIELD Portable

Another update was just released for the NVIDIA SHIELD Portable. This is just an optional update but it upgrades the gaming device to Android 5.1. Lollipop. We already mentioned it arriving a few months ago but it’s only now that the company rolled out the latest version.

While Android 5.1 is the newest and the sweetest Lollipop, this update unfortunately won’t support some features and games. Bad news for those who are fans of ‘Expendable: Rearmed’ and ‘SoniC 4’ and regular users of Miracast and Android Browser as support for them will no longer be available. We don’t know why these apps are not supported when you upgrade to the latest Lollipop OS but on the other hand, Chromecast and Google Cast ready devices are now supported.

Support Miracast have been removed permanently according to NVIDIA for unknown reasons. But since Chromecast is now fully supported, which we all know is a direct competitor of the Miracast, we can assume that either Google or NVIDIA wants exclusivity. If you use Twitch app, know that the program was updated to the latest version as well.

This version also removes the Android browser. It seems NVIDIA is cutting down some features. You might want to think twice if you really want this particular update. It’s okay NOT to yet because some important features are no longer available specifically Miracast and Android browser support.

SHIELD Portable Software upgrade is now ready for download. Check out the release notes first here.
