We may not be familiar with this secret project but Samsung’s “Perfect Experience” aka PX will be discontinued. According to a report by Variety, the South Korea giant has shut down the initiative only last July. While putting an end to a project may not be really harsh, the effect was that some employees were laid off including Avner Roner, former CEO of Boxee who joined Samsung when the TV startup was acquired two years ago for a quick $30 million.
No formal announcement has been made by Samsung even when asked for a comment but a spokesperson simply said they are not commenting on rumors and the company will still “invest in areas of our business that enhance the Samsung experience for our consumers”.
The PX Project had been going one for two years until last month. The idea was for a new remote control technology that would replace the old one. A tablet-looking mobile device would work as a remote control that would provide users access to media libraries on a custom-built user interface. Well, that could be something like Chromecast or those other similar HDMI streaming sticks available already in the market. The supposedly “next-gen remote control” would’t run apps but could provide access to different content. The idea was to include and use this device with Samsung’s very own digital TVs.
We may never know what really happened there but the company may have already seen that the project would go anywhere. That or maybe Samsung is becoming smarter know when it comes to their finances and that the executives are trying to focus on more revenue-generating initiatives, especially since sales and company growth are not as impressive the past few quarters as compared to before.
