It’s been 9 months since it has been updated and not it looks like QuickOffice is finally being truly pushed out of the picture by Google. A new “update” to the app has not really changed things, but instead informs users that this app isn’t being supported anymore and instead they should move on to Docs, Sheets, and Slides. We don’t get why they don’t just disable the app, but okay, a handful of people still use it, so there.
Last June, Google informed everyone that QuickOffice will not be developed or updated anymore because they will be focusing on the suite of Drive apps to create new documents and edit existing ones. While the app was still working for those who’ve already installed it, new users can’t search for it or download it from the Google Play Store anymore.
When an update for QuickOffice arrived yesterday, together with updates for Docs, Slides, and Sheets, people thought that Google changed their minds. But in fact, it is now configured that you can’t create any more new documents, but instead you’ll be redirected to the aforementioned editors, if you have them already. If you don’t, you’ll see a message telling you that “QuickOffice has gone Google”. You will then be prompted to download them from the Google Play Store or you can choose to stubbornly continue to QuickOffice.
While it’s still fully functional, the gist is that you can’t use both QuickOffice and Docs, Sheets, Slides on the same device. We’ll just have to probably wait a few more months or weeks until Google will finally close it down for good, when the remaining holdouts finally get the message.
