The Android-powered smartphone market is set to get much more crowded over the coming months. Google expects at least 18 new Android handsets to hit the market this year along and the number could go as high as 20 new handsets.

When Google made that announcement, it was mum on the manufacturers bringing the devices to market. It looks as one of them is HTC. DigiTimes reports that HTC will be holding an event on June 24 to launch the new HTC Hero smartphone powered by Android.

In fact, our own Chris Davies will be attending the launch event. The event will be held in London. The Hero itself is going to come in two versions with the difference being the inclusion of a QWERTY keyboard. The version without the keyboard is the HTC Memphis or Lancaster and will be an AT&T U.S. exclusive for its first six months.

  1. Haykuro beat them to it.
  2. LOL! I was just gonna say that kitsun!!
  3. wow i didnt expect the hero this soon!
  4. yes Haykuro is our HERO

but can't wait for official release.
  5. I think the HTC HERO will be my next android device. I like the style.. its different from phones we're used to. I like the ui its running plus the exterior. and it says there's a version with a keyboard?? ooo i'm sold.
  6. HTC Hero exclusive to Orange in the UK!
  7. Yeah, the Hero might be my next phone too.
I really like the different colors they have. Im thinking
of getting the teal HERO since it looks really different or
maybe the white...but white is too cliche. I would get red..
    but thats also cliche.

Does anyone know the release date for the HERO prior
to the announcement on June 24th? I want to start saving.
I wonder how much it will be? Hopefully less than 500...
but knowing that its an android phone, retailers will always
jack up the price in the beginning.

The HTC Magic is retailing for 600+ right now
And I feel like that phone is already outdated with
    all these new releases.

But I really want the HERO right now I cant wait any
longer. Sure theres Haykuro, but I want the actual phone too.
  8. Guys I think there is a mistake in your post.

The HTC Memphis or Lancaster IS the qwerty keyboard version of HTC Magic / My Touch 3G / Google Ion.

HTC Hero comes in different colors but keyboard-less.

The other model which could be an Android phone (I think) is the HTC Jasper C, if you remember HTC 2009 Lineup that was all over the internet at the beginning of the year.

    Greets,
    Diego!
  9. Yep, I was discussing this after the promo first leaked, but its not confirmed, the Hero WILL be released with a keyboard(at least one version will) That makes my decision for next Android device an easy one.
  10. The HTC Hero doesn't have a kb, the HTC Lancaster for at&t has the vk.

yeeea I like the hero in red, and black.. also the screen looks to be alot bigger than 3.2" looks more like 3.5 0r 3.7
  12. AT&T??!!! Lame, why not T-Mobile? ATT&T already has the damn iPhone. T-Mobile is a better service anyways. Was looking forward to the Hero, but I am soooooo not going to leave T-Mobile for it. This is very dissappointing.
  13. The one without the keyboard has a 6 month exclusive deal, the one with the keyboard may have the option to be picked up by another network.
  14. The Lancaster has the keyboard and will be exclusively on ATT for 6 months

in the usa maybe, why would they hold the launch in London for a USA only phone?
  16. Which phone is going to be considered the "G2"? I have read so many articles today and it all sounds like rumors.. Grr I want the "Hero" with T-mobile!

    Same.

Hopefully there an upgrade option to get rid of the G1 for the G2.

    Thats wishful thinking though.
  18. dam why did these phones have to go to AT&T?
