The popularity of Android devices is booming and all of the smartphones running the OS are currently made by third party developers rather than directly from Google. That said Google does often have hand in the design and functionality of devices running its OS.

Word has leaked out that Google may be set to get into the direct handset market with a handset that it will develop and build on its own. The rumor comes from a report published at TheStreet.com and would mark Google’s first entry into the smartphone market with its own device.

That is of course assuming that the rumors were true. The same report also claims that Google is building its own line of Chrome OS netbooks with availability predicted for 2010. I would assume the Android phone would be an unlocked device that could run on several networks.

  3. Heh heh, and we all thought Android itself would end the Google Phone rumors. Clearly not.
