The Google Japanese Input app has been updated recently with some new features and a new Material Design look to it. The app itself has been around for a while and is designed to allow a rich and relevant vocabulary set for convenient conversation with Japanese characters.

The app has words extracted for the desktop Japanese input software that Google offers. The update to the app landed on November 5 and brings with it a new look using Material Design. Faster access to numbers and punctuation has been added.

Voice input and Emoji input shortcut keys have been added. For people on Android 5.0, the app has an input method key switch. Android 5.0 users can also open a candidate window when using a hardware keyboard.

The app also has integrated support for hardware Japanese JIS keyboard with Android 4.1 or higher. Google Play says that the app has been installed as many as 5,000,000 times since it launched. The current version varies with the device, as does the required version of Android. The updated app is available to download now.

UPDATE: Other inputs including Hindi, Pinyin, Zhuyin and Korean are updated with Material design as well. Now what’s left without the Material design are the Google Cantonese Input and the original Google Keyboard!
