Flyscreen now available for Android

31 August 2009 by Shane McGlaun

If you want to make your lock screen on your Android device useful for something other than preventing you from hitting buttons accidentally, here is your chance. The developers behind FlyScreen have an Android version available now.

flyscreen

The Android version of the program allows the user to install a collection of widgets onto the home screen to allow you to access Twitter, Facebook and others without unlocking your device. The software is only being offered to users of HTC phones with Android 1.5 at this point.

TechCrunch is offering 1000 users with the right hardware the chance to use the software. The application sounds good and it’s not clear why Flyleaf won’t work with other phones, perhaps it will.

  1. i just signed up for the beta testing for this

can't wait to test it out

hope i have time to write a quick review with screenshots
i know ive been laggin with reviews =(
  2. Where did you sign up Johnny?
  3. Yeah I signed up earlier this morning.
I hope I get an invite. This app looks promising!!
  4. With the exception of not having flash, this app will put the regular android roms on par with the hero.
  5. Sent the promo code in for an invite. Can't wait! Looks amazing! I wonder how this will effect battery life....
  6. If its only for htc android phones, why is the phone in the picture a nokia n95, which doesn't run android?
  7. there's a nokia (symbian) version.. that's why the image shows a nokia... they're working on an android version..
  8. I lucked out, its about time someone takes advantage of the work arounds of animated widgets and using them though.
  9. i still haven't got my invite

wonder if there gonna port theses into widgets for the android homescreen also just not for the lockscreen.
  10. This looks like a nice app. I also saw "executive assistant +" just show up in the market. I wonder how similar these apps are. I'll probably buy+try and return if I don't like it..

too bad flyscreen isn't out yet to test how it compares
  11. Screenshots! So "FLY"SCREEN!

Have any questions feel free to ask!
  12. You have to register with them to use the app? EW, I hate needing to do that. I can sort of understand meebo and ebuddy registering, but a lockscreen app? Why would you need to register for that? is it a free program at least?

It allows you to add and remove widgets from the web and certain apps like Facebook need permission and you have to do it from the web when you log in.
You can also add RSS feeds and there is also a SMS widget and Calendar widget.
  14. As long as you don't have to e-mail them back, you can have them e-mail the reg info to a disposable email account at http://www.mailinator.com
  15. So... what do you do when you actually want to avoid accidentally hitting buttons 'n shiz on the screen?
  16. So, does this not kinda make the lock screen not locked? If I gather right from the screenshots, you can update status etc from locked screen... That cant be too good for battery and accidental activity in pocket. Am I misunderstanding?
  17. Flyscreen Beta now available!!
    Get it here: http://status.myflyscreen.com/
    Direct download: http://myf.ly/v100a
  18. If you, like me, applied to be a tester of FlyScreen but never got the e-mail with the download link (and if you haven't downloaded the xda apk ) you can now use FlyScreen. Just go to http://status.myflyscreen.com/ and download the .apk.. You must be registered to use this since some widgets (like the Facebook one for example) need to be added directly from the site...

They say that is Experimental but I've had no problems with it up 'til now...(Cyanogen 4.0.4, yea that donut gave me problems and i crawled back to 4.0.4 begging for forgiveness )

    Enjoy
  19. Flyscreen out of Beta and in The Android Market!!! Get it Now!

Just kidding! I don't touch my phone while driving!
  22. Can't create an account because I apparently already signed up.
I can't log in because the user name doesn't exist...

    Vicious cycle...

    Try contacting them for troubleshooting.
They are pretty good when it comes to customer support!

  24. downloading it right now
  25. Fare: In Flyscreen your username is your country code followed by your phone number (minus the 0 at the beginning) ie. 447951123456 for a UK phone number 07951123456.

When registering, I selected my correct county identification, then entered my phone number. When I clicked register, it automatically put the country code (1 in my case) in from of my phone number (there's a little confirmation box).

When I go to the password recovery part of their site, it's the same thing. I select the proper country code, then enter in my phone number, but it comes up as "This Username doesn't exists."

This is all null and void because I have never signed up on their site to begin with (unless you automatically did when you signed up for beta access...). I'd like to think that if I registered when I signed up, that I would have had a confirmation email in my inbox at some point (I don't ever delete a email; a quick search of "flyScreen" yielded nothing).

I'm sure It's a database thingy or whatever, I'm sure it will be remedied when they get back to me. I'd really like to try this, it looks really interesting.

So are we getting a review from "The self proclaimed widget Guru?"
This is in the top 5 maybe even #1 when it comes to widgets!
  28. Damn, this app is real nice.
  29. For all those people waiting on the edge of their chairs to see weather or not my issue was solved...

It was. Itamar from the FlyScreen team email me. I solved the problem without him, but I wanted to reiterate the fact that they quickly respond to people (The CEO/co-founder no less (I talked to a CEO /giddy)).

Apparently the error screen I found was misleading. It told me to goto http://myflyscreen.appspot.com where no user was found. However, when I visited http://myflyscreen.com, everything was honky dori.

Time to play with this app ^^

yeah probably, i havent done a widget review in such a long time or a review in general haha
  32. i gotta say its a pretty cool app/widget/lock screen
  33. Apps like this make me wish the G1 was faster/had more ram =/

There is often a couple second delay between switching to flyscreen and switching to your homescreen. inevitable I suppose when you have a couple widgets/other background services running all the time...

::EDIT:: Is there a way to have AccuWeather show temps in Fahrenheit?
  34. hey

I am trying to run this on CM4.3.2.1 - but it FC every time.....That is now after I got so far as to register and put my details in.....Will a reboot solve the problem of the FC's?

    Thanks
