We’d probably just have to get used to the way ASUS does things. They release a brand line and then pepper it with multiple options from entry level to high end. That’s what they did when they announced a refresh of their ZenPad tablet line. But now we’re probably seeing the top of the line, as it were, as the Taiwan-based manufacturer is even calling this new variant of the ZenPad S 8.0 its “flagship” tablet – the Z580CA model.

As the number in the branding already betrays, you will be getting an 8.0-inch display with this tablet, and this flagship variant has a gorgeous 2K (2048×1536) QXGA IPS LCD display. That is powered by an Intel Atom Z3580 – quad-core, with 64-bit capability and up to 2.3GHz per core. That will be backstopped by 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. If that’s not enough for your HD movies, there is a microSD card slot capable of expansion up to 128GB.

Then you get the incidentals, which give a device its premium feel. The Z580CA model has DTS Premium Sound speakers, and the display panel up front is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. More and more devices are coming with the USB type C port, and this one is no different. No need to worry if you’re plugging in the cable the right way – there is no wrong way! And if you’re feeling like you want to take a pic, this one has an 8MP rear camera with a 5MP front-facing cam that should be sufficient for your selfie needs.

You would expect a robust device like this to be priced higher, but ASUS reminds us that it is part of that generation of manufacturers trying to pull down gadget prices. This will be available via Amazon, Newegg, and the ASUS online store for USD$299 – certainly a challenge to other brands to match that pricing. The Z Stylus accessory will start selling by September for $29.99.
