For those who are concerned with online security and protecting all their digital properties, it is almost automatic for them to regularly change their passwords and maybe even subscribe to a password management app. But for a lot of users who don’t think a whole lot about cybersecurity, the more important thing is actually remembering your password and not getting locked out of an account. Dropbox is sending a reminder for those who have not changed their passwords in four years to do so as a “preventive measure”.

The official statement from Dropbox states that all those who have signed up for the cloud storage service before mid-2012 will be receiving a prompt to update their passwords if they have not changed it since they signed up. They are quick to assure users though that their account was not compromised in any way and that this is just a reminder so you can ensure your files are kept safe. They have a password strength meter to guide you so you will not put something as simple as 123456ABCDE as your password.

Dropbox does talk about an incident where a set of user credentials were somehow acquired in 2012. They were related to an incident they disclosed at that time, but they assure users that based on their threat monitoring, no accounts were “improperly accessed”.

Still, as part of taking precautions, they are sending those who have not changed their passwords since then a prompt to change it. And it wouldn’t hurt to follow Dropbox’ prompt as it will benefit you eventually. Well, unless you always forget your passwords. But there are more ways now to manage things like that, so better do what they say.
