If you think that stealing a prototype of an upcoming gadget is a piece of cake, think again, especially if you live in Brazil. Whoever was caught with a stolen prototype of the soon to be announced Sony Xperia C5 Ultra will not just be faced with jail time (we assume) but probably a hefty fine as well. That’s because they have valued the prototype not at the supposed market price but rather on the development cost of the device, which is at $12M.
The prototype of the Xperia C5 Ultra, the upcoming bezel-less device from Sony, was apparently stolen from a certification forum last July 17. The Brazilian police set up a minor sting operation, researching for the man on Facebook. They then set up a meet with him, pretending interest in buying the prototype. When he took the phone out when they eventually met at a restaurant, he was then arrested. Instead of valuing the device at its eventual market price, which is reportedly around $893, the police instead looked at the development cost for the smartphone to come up with the $12M figure.
Just a few days ago, a supposed user guide for the Xperia C5 Ultra was allegedly leaked, and it showed that the device will indeed be bezel-less (well, if you believe the user guide). It will also reportedly have 2GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, a 13MP camera, a front-facing camera of unknown MP but with front-facing flash as well. Rumors have also said that the C5 Ultra is also the Sony Lavender.
Sony will reportedly announce the Xperia C5 Ultra soon, even before the Xperia Z5 or the H2 phones. No word yet from Sony either regarding the smartphone or the theft in Brazil of the supposed prototype.
