Ever heard of those eccentric new video cameras that take 360-degree videos? Well, it looks like we will be seeing a lot of those soon on YouTube as the Google-owned video hosting site has announced that it will be supporting these specific uploads. If you haven’t seen one, we’ll show you one below, but suffice it to say it is a totally different experience when you are able to see all the way around.
These crazy footage will come from bubble lens cameras and those companies who jumped early on 360-degree video, like the Ricoh Theta, the Kodak SP360, Giroptic’s 360cam, VSN V.360, the Bublcam, just to name a few. It will be interesting, because all of these different cameras give a different type of 360-degree view. We hope Youtube will be able to deal with that.
Google has put out a guide for those who want to jump on 360-degree content and upload their current videos. The catch is, you’ll need to write a little bit of code into your video files before they’re uploaded – for now. An automatic, hassle-free process is the goal in the near future, but for now, users will have to either enable the feature OR use a script.
The technology is exciting, especially as a lot of people are jumping on the virtual reality bandwagon these days. Imagine being able to look at these videos in high quality and be able to “look around” using a VR headset. Let’s see if companies like Samsung, LG, and Google Cardboard make this connection soon.
