They may be rivals when it comes to smartphones, but when one makes a product that the other may need for their own product, then no lines will be drawn. Chinese powerhouses Xiaomi and Huawei are rumored to soon be releasing new smartphones with curved displays and the panels they will supposedly be use are from two Korean OEMs, LG and Samsung respectively. Both have already released their own curved devices and have somewhat proven their expertise, in this aspect at least.
A Chinese website, MyDriver, said that both smartphone makers will be releasing their first curved display devices by September this year. Xiaomi will reportedly be announcing the Mi Edge or the Mi Note Edge sometime soon and they will be using LG’s flexible screen, similar to what they use in their G Flex series. Other rumored specs of that device include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM and a 16MP rear camera. They even have an estimated price of $463.
Meanwhile, erstwhile rival Huawei will reportedly be working with Samsung in creating the “Mate Edge”. As a brand that has made famous the dual edge display kind of smartphone, the Korean OEM would be the perfect partner for Huawei, even though they will probably end up competing with each other in that category. The edge phone will supposedly be powered by their in-house Kirin 950 chipset and will also have 4GB of RAM. It is estimated to cost around $617.
Now whether these projects will be pushing through is still anyone’s guess, but the curved display segment is still pretty new and wide open, so the Chinese smartphone makers might choose to be in it at this point in time.
