Even though the WhatsApp voice calling feature was introduced to Android early in 2015, it has fast become one of the ways that people communicate with each other on a global basis. Now the Facebook-owned messaging service announced that they are now hitting around 100 million calls per day or over 1,100 calls per second. That’s not talk time but the number of actual voice calls people do every day. They also hint that they are “committed to making it even better” in the next few months.

It’s hard to find actual numbers from its competitors to compare it with, since not everyone announce their metrics in similar fashion. But given the timeframe in which the audio calls through WhatsApp became available, that seems like a pretty good achievement. Earlier this year, they announced they had one billion users worldwide and when they introduced voice calls last year, they had 800 million monthly active users. So that’s more than 200 million added since they let people call through the app.

Now as to what those next movies will be, we can only speculate at this point. But the natural progression would of course be to add video calls as an option for users. They have actually been seen testing out this kind of feature this spring, although we haven’t heard anything solid in a while. Some other rumored upcoming functions include a callback button when you miss an important call or a voicemail feature so you can leave a message they can listen to later.

Messaging apps have been continually upping their game in light of tighter competition and more players in the market. But that’s good news for consumers since not only will they get more choices, but they also will have great features from those competing for their attention and loyalty.
