Have you ever been in a group chat with friends or colleagues and you just stepped out for a few minutes and when you come back, 100+ unread messages? Now what if buried in those tons of messages were some things that were important for you or needed your attention? This is pretty important if it’s a work-related thing and even if it’s personal as well. It’s a good thing that several messaging apps are finally adding mention features, and the latest to do this is WhatsApp.
Just like what you do on social networks like Twitter or Facebook or Instagram, putting the @ symbol during your chat would pull up a bunch of names of people you’re friends with. Just choose the one you want to actually mention and then add the name and said person will receive a notification that someone just mentioned them. It will only work of course if you’re in a group conversation since there is no need for it if you’re talking to just one person.
Other messaging and similar apps like Telegram, Slack, etc have this feature as well, and it is pretty useful especially for times when a lot of people are active in your group or you’re all on different time zones and so when someone wakes up, there are several messages waiting for you to backread. It’s important to know where exactly in the conversation you were mentioned.
This feature will show up on your WhatsApp depending on the developer, since it’s a server-side updated. So if you’re still not seeing it in your app, just wait a few more days and they will probably get to you.
