April Fools Day is still a few months away, and yet this piece of news sounds like something especially made for that “holiday”. A smartphone that can also be used as a vaping device is a product that is either the most interesting innovation we’ve heard of lately or a great big hoax that intends to go viral and is making a statement about consumerism or something. But either way, the Jupiter smartphone with a built-in vaporizer seems serious in marketing itself and even has a legit-looking website, although it is devoid of information.
All we know from looking at their site is that it is a device that you can use to text, talk, and vape, maybe all at the same time. It even says that you will be able to vape fluids, medicines, or nutraceuticals through this smartphone. They also claim that the product is a collaboration among several interesting people: Herbert A. Gilbert, the first to patent an electronic cigarette, Seamus Blackley who creates video games and co-created the X Box, inventor John Cameron, entrepreneur Paul Rock, and intellectual property pioneer Dean Becker among others.
But the lack of information on the website about the specs of the actual product itself makes it look like an elaborate prank or a viral stunt. Aside from its size (5.95-inches and a 5.3-inch display), and the fact that it has 4G LTE connection, and of course its price ($499), there isn’t any other technical specs that would make us believe it’s an actual product. They responded to an article in The Verge by posting a video on their Instagram, saying that, yes, “the Jupiter is real”.
They did say that they don’t have FCC approval yet and that the Jupiter isn’t available for sale or lease yet in the United States, or basically anywhere else. So what do you think, real product or prank? And if it was real, would you buy one?
