If you’ve noticed a weird camera with the words “live” button on your Twitter today, that only means you’re part of the small percentage of users that are being tested to have the Periscope go live option. Even though the live broadcast app was out of the market first (second only to the now beleaguered Meerkat), its competitor, Facebook Live has made more impact in the market and so the Twitter-owned app has to play catch up now.

The go live button can actually be seen as one of the options when you go to your compose window, alongside the photo, video, and gallery buttons. If you have a Periscope app installed on your smartphone, clicking the go live button will allow you to start your live broadcast. If you don’t have the app yet, it will then redirect you to the Google Play Store so you can get it, if you’re interested.

Periscope has always been separate from Twitter and it was good for building their identity and establishing a different user base. However, not being integrated into their mother company has slowed down its growth, unlike Facebook, whose live broadcast feature is built into the main app and there is no need to get a separate app.

Right now, only a small percentage of Twitter users will see this new feature but according to the official statement from the company, in the next few months, “all users will have the ability to start a Periscope broadcast from Twitter.”
