We were wondering what was to become of Google’s Android One project. If you don’t know what Android One is, it is Google’s attempt to make Android accessible even to the developing markets, so as to reach the “next billion” customers for Android. But Google has had a rethink – both with the One and the Nexus brand – and so we have the new General Mobile GM5, an Android One entry level phone with Nougat flavors.
The General Mobile GM5 is indeed an Android One platform, an entry level phone but with solid specs. You have a 5-inch HD (720p) IPS LCD screen powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. The body design shows metal edges, a textured back design, and the camera module that sits top center at the back. There are dual speakers on each side of the USB port at the bottom, and the 3.5mm audio jack is housed on the top edge.
The GM5 sports a standard USB port, rather than the new USB-C ones, which charges the 2,500mAh battery. There’s no microSD expansion, so cloud storage is your only solution if you need more space. But there is support for 4G LTE. Of course, we will not fail to mention that the software is Android Nougat, the first for Android One phones.
General Mobile plans to launch the phone only in the following 20 markets: Azerbaijan, Albania, Afghanistan, Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Ghana, Greece, Iraq, Kenya, Luxembourg, Moldova, Netherlands, Pakistan, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. No price tag available yet for the GM5.
