Supporting research for cancer cures is one of the most important things we can do as this disease will probably affect us one way or another. But if you don’t have any spare money to donate to cancer research but you want to do more than just wear a ribbon or do an ice bucket-like challenge for awareness, a new Android app can help you with that. DreamLab uses your smartphone’s processing power while you’re not using it so you can aid in the research.

The DreamLab app has been created in cooperation with the Garvan Insitute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia. What it does is to gather all the processing power of smartphone users who have installed the app and has given it permission to use its computing power to create a “networked supercomputer”. This will actually help the researchers as they do their work on computers, looking for cures for breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancer.

They are looking at having 100,000 users of the app and that will make their data crunching operations become 3,000 faster than their current rate. If you have the app, you’ll be able to choose how much of your data when your smartphone is idle that they will be able to use (250MB, 500MB or 1GB per month) as well as to which type of cancer cure you’d like to support. It can run on both WiFi and mobile networks.

If you’re a Vodafone subscriber in Australia you won’t be charged for the data that you use through the app. You can download the DreamLab app from the Google Play Store for free.
