If there’s probably just one thing you’d hate about owning a Sony Xperia device, it’s probably the bootloaders that prohibit booting into a recovery partition. Make no mistake about it, Sony Xperia devices are known for their aesthetic and chic minimalist design, and their premium hardware. But tweaking the software to run the custom ROM you want is always a huge headache.
For those who regularly try custom ROMs, booting into a recovery partition is part and parcel of the standard operating procedure in tweaking Android devices to run custom ROMs. That is why most manufacturers allow (after a fashion) booting into the recovery partition. Sadly, Sony was not of that same persuasion. The locked bootloaders and the “no recovery” policy meant there had to be special ways to run custom ROMs in Xperia devices. We have CyanogenMod, AOKP, and OmniROM for that, but still, the headache exists.
That may not be for long though, as Sony Mobile is releasing new bootloaders that will allow booting into a recovery partition. This has yet to be announced, but the bootloaders are already available for download and installation. Check out the source link below for clear instructions on how to do this. The caveat, of course, is that you have an unlocked bootloader to begin with. You may need to contact Sony for that, but it’s worth it.
The new bootloaders are, for now, only for the Sony Xperia devices that have Cortex-A7 processors. Those include the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia T3, Xperia M2, and Xperia E3. We hope other devices from the Xperia line follow suit soon.
