Sony will be updating several Xperia smartphones and one Xperia tablet to Android 4.4 Kit Kat over the coming weeks. The smartphones include the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR and the tablet is the Xperia Tablet Z. Sony has yet to release a firm timeline for the rollout, however there was mention of the update beginning today for “selected markets.”
From that point Sony has promised that more markets will “follow over the coming weeks.” The update is bringing Kit Kat, which includes the basics such as performance improvements and user interface tweaks. Looking specifically towards the Sony version of the Kit Kat update and there was mention of the PlayStation 4.
“If you’ve got a Sony PlayStation 4, you might recognize our new user interface – we’ve added the same sleek launch animation and live wallpaper across the lock and home screens.”
The Status Bar and Quick Settings were also revamped and according to Sony, they are “now more intuitive and customizable.”
Aside from the styling being pulled from the PlayStation 4, those with any of these Xperia devices can also expect to see some updates for the Sony branded apps. This means updates for the “entire native app portfolio” which includes Messaging, Email, Smart Social Camera and Battery STAMINA Mode. The media apps including WALKMAN, Album and Movies will also be updated.
Otherwise, aside from Android 4.4 Kit Kat arriving for the Xperia Z, ZL, ZR and Tablet Z in the coming weeks — there was also mention about an update for the Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2. According to Sony, a Kit Kat update will be arriving for those three handsets in July.
