Sony is bringing some Xperia users an early Christmas present as they have started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Xperia X, Xperia X Dual, and the Xperia X Compact. This is part of the OEM’s plan to have majority of its newer line-up “Nougatified” before 2016 ends. The Xperia X Performance and the flagship Xperia XZ have already received their updates just recently, so hopefully the gradual rollout will finish by the end of the year.

The firmware update for the three smartphones moves their build number to version 34.2.A.0.266, just in case anyone’s keeping track. This means you’ll get a bunch of new features that Nougat is bringing over, including a revamped notification system. It also builds on some of the features already introduced in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It also comes with better multitasking features like using two apps at the same time. You also get the Data Saver so you can easily monitor the amount of data that you consume while browsing or using any of the apps.

The rollout of major updates is expectedly slow as it goes through many levels of testing, approval and rollout from Google to the OEM and if you’re tied to carrier, then it goes through there as well. Android users have gotten used to not holding their breath while waiting for the update, except when you’re using a Nexus device.

The rollout for the Xperia X, Xperia X Dual, and the Xperia X Compact has started in Australia, Latin America, Middle East, Russia, Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam. It will probably expand to more countries and territories in the next few days.
