We have to admit, a lot of the apps that we use on our smartphones or tablets consume the most battery and memory , either because of its features or that it does a lot of things even while in the background. We look forward to AVG’s quarterly app report so we can be more conscious about which among all the apps on our phone are “killing” or draining its performance. For the 2nd quarter of the year, the undisputed “winner” is Snapchat, despite its ephemeral content.

You would think that for an app that prides itself in not keeping pictures and videos on its servers, it would not drain so much your battery and memory right? But since it uses your WiFi, camera, mobile data, and GPS functionality sometimes at the same time, then it’s no surprise that it is the #1 smartphone killer, joining the likes of Spotify, Amazon Shopping, Netflix, Amazon Kindle, etc. You’ll see several Amazon Shopping sites there, so not only do they drain your wallet, but your smartphone as well.

They’ve actually divided the chart into two, one for those that auto start or run in the background, while the other list is those initiated by the users. With the apps that run in the background, Facebook is still tops, with its other service, the Facebook Pages Manager also close to it at third (Google Play Services is the one that got in between them). What’s surprising is that Words with Friends and The Weather Channel are there when they shouldn’t be running in the background.

The survey also indicates that Tumblr is the highest-traffic consuming app during this quarter and that Google Chrome is the 2nd highest storage-consuming app, since of course it stores user browsing data. Seeing apps you use on this list doesn’t necessarily mean that you should delete them. If they’re useful and relevant to you, then you have no choice. But if you don’t use them very often, then better just delete them to save you some memory and some space, not to mention some power.
