The guys over at Android Police presumably got a part of the APK code for the upcoming Google Camera 3.0 – this is the camera app that will go with the Android 6.0 release that is coming up in a few weeks’ time. This app will most likely be featured in the two Google Nexus smartphones that will be released (the two that we know of, that is), together with the full unveiling of Android Marshmallow. Digging around the code now gives us a look at what the new Smart Burst feature is all about.

The Smart Burst feature is not new to Google Camera 3.0. It was tested out in Google Camera 2.5, but it was still being refined and was still in its very early stages. Basically, the idea was that instead of hoping you got the perfect picture, you take rapid multiple shots of the same frame and pick one that’s the best. We didn’t have an idea before on what happens after the “burst”, but a string in the new APK basically explains what Smart Burst can do.

Google-Camera_code

First it tells us how to use Smart Burst, which is pretty simple and intuitive, like how other burst camera features are – you hold down the capture button, which tells the camera to capture images at the fastest speed it’s capable of, until the user lets go of the button or the camera runs out of storage. Then it also tells us that you can either choose one photo from the bunch, or make a collage of them, or make an animated GIF out of a select range.

That part is awesome and is something we have been waiting for in a smartphone for quite a bit now, and it’s good the Google is catching up on the need. We’ll have to see how this applies to the new Nexus phones, and if we will be getting this feature as well in an app that we can install in other devices.
