There are a lot of instant messaging apps available for businesses today. It’s not just Skype and Hangouts being used in the offices as there are other newer and better solutions ready for download on your desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile phone. One of those making the world smaller than ever is Slack. It’s a new messaging program that is easily accessible from any device.
Slack offers real time messaging that also allows one-on-one chats and group conversations. It allows file sharing so you can send important documents and media files from one account to another without having to email or send attachment. Messages are archived and can be searched whenever you need to look up past conservations. This means you have no reason now to be out of the loop because you can always check and search.
Slack works with several social networks, storage services, and productivity tools. You can integrate your Slack account with Zendesk, Twitter, Google+, Hangouts, Asana for project management, and Dropbox for file storage and sharing. Videos and images shared within a Slack conversation can be accessed on a web browser. Links shared also come with summaries for a quick overview.
Since Slack can be accessed from anywhere, all messages and activities are instantly synced across all devices. You can set different notifications whether you’re on your desktop or mobile. You can choose to receive push or email notifications.
The term ‘Slack’ may mean lack of activity but the development team, Slack Technologies, says this is the opposite. It has been “scientifically proven to make working life, simpler, more pleasant, and more productive”. I don’t doubt those words but where is the scientific proof? What an exaggeration, Slack team.
At present, Slack if free for all. Plans can be upgraded for unlimited integrations, file storage, customizable data retention policios, and extended message history. App was released sometime August 2013 and it was recently updated to now include a “BOT” indicator for messages sent by bots. Some bugs have been fixed as well including that of a file uploaded message not displaying properly in a channel. No details have been given yet but a certain support was added for a secret feature yet to be unveiled in the near future.
